The first stop of the Vans Pro Park Series took place April 16 at the St Kilda skatepark just outside of Melbourne, Australia and seemed like a fitting time to finally add a post to the site. Vans events are always super fun to work so was stoked to get on the webcast crew with Uncle Toads Media Group for the inagural event. Melbourne has become one of my favorite cities, I've been there twice before for the World Series of Poker Asia Pacific stop and skated the St Kilda park during both trips so knew this was a place I wanted to get back to. Plus it's a skate comp in Australia, next to the beach so what could be better? Penguins. Yep, there are little blues that come up to nest every night just a short walk away from the venue.
The St Kilda park is located right at the end of the beach across from Luna Park with is one of the oldest amusement parks in the Southern Hemisphere.
The level of skating is getting rediculous, the park isn't huge by any means but they made it look like a mini ramp. Rumors of a big comp in Japan possibly? There definitely was an impressive international field, the Scandinavians even risked sunburn to impress the crowd.
When all was said and done Chris Russel slayed it like the madman he is, staying on things that would've/should've sent others to the flat bottom and wound up with the big check. Pedro Berros heated things up for Brazil with the biggest airs of the weekend and Kevin Kowalski took some gnarball lines for the third spot. This is definitely a fun comp to watch and looking toward to joining back up in Hastings BC.
Melbourne has an awesome street art scene and some stellar veggie food so I took part of the crew on a site seeing and tattoo mission. Fingers crossed things return next year and a big high five to Vans for always putting on some of the best events.
Next up Detroit for Hart Lines......
